Bonita Louise Nichols Haynes was born to George and Susie Smith Nichols on January 1, 1935, in their home near Fairview, Oklahoma. She softly slipped away from us in the evening hours of February 20, 2021, nearly 3 weeks after suffering a fall. Mother’s growing-up years at Fairview in a lively family setting formed the background for many stories, telling them whenever and wherever she found an audience. On March 21, 1950, she was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, by her father. This faith and heritage was precious to her, and she remained faithful to the end. On January 24, 1954, she was united in marriage to John Haynes, and they made their home near Middleton, Michigan. Very shortly thereafter Dad was called to 1-W service, and they spent two years in Roseburg, Oregon. Two sons were born into their home. Mother embraced her responsibility as a minister’s wife when Dad was ordained to the gospel ministry on December 12, 1967. She exercised her greatest gift in accepting others. Her heart always reached toward people who had a need, and she made many loyal friends with her selfless caring. Mother’s life became tedious and difficult during the pandemic year of 2020, and we are thankful that she can exchange her worn garments for a spotless robe of white. Those left to mourn her passing are her faithful husband John, two sons: Mark and Lynette of Middleton, Michigan, Sheldon and Gayle of Uvalde, Texas. Grandchildren: Joni (Michael) Gearig, Melissa (Jay) Burns, Stephanie (Jason) Warkentin, and Michael and Andreé Haynes, five great-grandchildren, and many friends and acquaintances. Her Nichols family: Naomi (Bill) Wenger, Marlene (Dale) Nichols, Harold and Shirley Nichols, Galen and Bernice Nichols, June and Harold Jantz, and Jack Nichols. The care givers at Arbor Grove Assisted Living also became her faithful friends during her last year. Private funeral services will be held on February 24, 2021, at the Mt. Calm Mennonite Church, Carson City, Michigan with Ministers Mike Litwiller, James Leid, and Jack Burns officiating. A public visitation will take place on Tuesday from 4 P.M. to 7 P.M. at the church. Burial will take place in the Mt Calm Mennonite Church Cemetery. Those desiring, may make contributions in Bonita’s memory to Maple View Retirement Community, 4396 S. Luce Road, Ithaca, MI 48847.
