Carmen Loarene (Wilbur) Young age 99, of rural Albion, went home to be with her Lord on August 21, 2023, at her home surrounded by her children and grandchildren on her farm. Mrs. Young was born March 28th, 1924, near the Village of Harrietta, Michigan to Alpha (Cady) and Claude Wilbur. Mrs. Young was the 6th of 11 children. She married Edward Albert Young on November 24th, 1942. Her husband preceded her in death on May 14th, 1984. She and her husband raised seven children in rural Albion on the family farm. Mrs. Young went on to continue to farm and hold onto the family farm for over 39 years after her husband’s death. The farm has been in the family for over 100 years.
Mrs. Young lived in Northern Michigan during the early years of her life. She went to school in the evening to complete her high school diploma in 1971 at the age of 47 years of age. Mrs. Young worked at several local factories and retired from Eaton Corporation. In past years, she had large vegetable and flower gardens. Mrs. Young was known as a wonderful cook. She never followed a recipe. She was best known for her homemade cherry pie. She made homemade bread and strawberry jam that was loved by her many grandchildren. Her grandsons especially loved that she always made sure to have Nesquik chocolate milk for them. Her granddaughters had the opportunity to can with her. She, in her earlier life, enjoyed crocheting and knitting. She enjoyed bird watching and loved nature. Mrs. Young believed in education and told her grandchildren that all they needed to be a student was a library card or the internet. Even in her later years, she followed politics and was an avid reader. Mrs. Young’s favorite saying was “Spring is right around the corner.” Her family is honored and blessed by her example of a long life well lived in the service of others.
She was a matriarch to her family and her influence and guidance will impact many generations to come.
Carmen is survived by her children; Carol Henry of Albion, Alan (Linda) Young of Olivet, Steven (Chris) Young of Twin Lake, Helen (Robert) Burris of Mesa, Arizona, James Young of Marshall, Brian (Cheryl) Young of Marshall; 13 grandchildren; 43 great grandchildren; 10 great great grandchildren; and 1 great great great-grandchild.
