Elwin J. Smith, age 98 of Charlotte, MI passed away on Saturday, January 12, 2013. Elwin was born August 17, 1914 in Chester Township of Eaton County the son of Ira and Reva (Mabee) Smith and had been a lifelong resident of Eaton County. He had served for 26 years on the Eaton County Sheriff’s Department, the first 10 years as a deputy Sheriff and 16 years as the Sheriff of Eaton County before retiring in 1972. He was a Past President of the Washington School P. T. A, past President of the Charlotte Band Boosters, past President of the Charlotte Junior Chamber of Commerce, was a past President and life member of the Michigan Sheriff’s Association, had served three years on the Charlotte City Council, was a life member of the Charlotte Lodge #120 F. & A. M. and was currently a member of the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church. He is survived by daughters, Karen (Ron) Emerson of Lansing and Reyes Smith of Royal Oak; granddaughter, Briana Emerson; sister, Shirley Sleight of Charlotte and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by: his wife of 48 years, Eva L. (Vedder) Smith in 1989; sister, Hattie Baribeau and brothers, Glen Smith and Donald Smith. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A. M. Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte with Pastor Terry Fisher officiating. Interment will be in the Meadowbrook Cemetery at Mulliken, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 6-8 P.M. and Wednesday from 10:00 A. M until time of services at the Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Eaton Area Senior Center, 804 S.
