Esther Sloan

Esther C. (Zanger) Sloan, 95 of Olivet died Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at Sensations Memory Care Residence in Charlotte. She was born April 6, 1916, in Brooklyn, Iowa to George and Alma (Shultz) Zanger, the oldest of 17 brothers and sisters. Most of her life was lived in and around Charlotte. She graduated from Charlotte High School. Esther married Harold Sloan 76 years ago on Sept. 9, 1935, in Goshen, Indiana. Esther worked as a printer’s devil, a seamstress at Richey’s, a census taker and a cook in the Charlotte School System. She was a member of the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church for many years. She also was involved as a Guardian of Jobs Daughters, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a Cub Scout Den Mother. What she loved most was being a wife, Mother and homemaker. Her talent as a wonderful cook and her interest in gardening helped her fulfill love of always being a homemaker. For many years, she belonged to a bridge club with 9 of her friends and later, after they moved to the farm on Lacy Lake Road, she and Harold were members of a Euchre club with 15 close friends. She is survived by her loving husband Harold, daughter, Karen Sullivan of Gaylord, sons, David (Sharon) Sloan of Olivet and Mark (Chris) Sloan of Sheboygan, WI, 9 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers, Charles Zanger, Jack Garner and Don Swartz, sister, Lillian Hitz and half brothers and sisters, John Zanger, Clarence Zanger, Mary Morrison, Verna Radcliff, Marjorie Kuhn and Sherry Burton. She was preceded in death by brothers and sister, Floyd Jackson, Dewayne Depew, Edna Hammond and by half brothers and sisters, Robert VanNostrand, Howard VanNostrand and Marjorie VanNostrand. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, March 24, 2012 at the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church, Charlotte, with Rev. Terry Fisher officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday from 6-9 P.M. at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte. Interment will be in the West Carmel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church.
