Gordon C. Cheney, age 88 of Charlotte, MI, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2011 at his residence. Gordon was born Feb. 23, 1922 in Tekonsha, MI the son of Albert C. and Allie (Grice) Cheney. He and his father operated the former Cheney Funeral Home of Charlotte before working for the Earl Little Funeral Home in Monroe and later the R. G. & G. R. Harris Funeral Homes in Detroit. He came back to Charlotte and formed a partnership with M Donald Burkhead to form the Burkhead-Cheney Funeral Home. He then went to work for the Mich. Dept. of Treasury in Lansing from where he retired in 1987. He served in the U. S. Army Air Corps from 1943-45, was a member and past Commander of the Greenwalt-Flaherty Post #42 American Legion, was a member of the Lawrence Ave. United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Charlotte Lions Club and the Charlotte Lodge #120 F. & A. M. Surviving are: 2 daughters, Jane (Gerald) Cuendet of Sun City, AZ and Sue (Robert) Ayotte of Charlotte; 2 grandchildren;, Susan (Greg Campbell) Ayotte and Rob Kathy) Ayotte; daughter-in-law, Mary O. Cheney of Alden; great grandchildren, Travis, Alan & Allison Hester; great granddaughter, Cara Ferguson; sisters-in-law, Margaret Cheney of East Lansing and Rose Cheney of Traverse City; several nieces and nephews and “adopted daughter” caregiver, Kristen Curtis. He was preceded in death by: his parents; his wife, Loretta Cheney; son, G. William Cheney; brothers, Edward, William, Gail and Harold Cheney and sister, Marian Herman. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A. M. Monday, Feb.7, 2011 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home with Pastor Mark Booth officiating. Interment will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Sunday at the Funeral Home.
