Gordon S. Phillips, age 72 of Albion, MI, died Saturday, May 5, 2012 at his residence with his loving family at his side. Gordon was born May 27, 1939 in Newberry, MI the son of Wayne and Dorothy (Miller) Phillips and had been an Albion resident since 1974 coming from Defiance, OH. He was a 1957 Graduate of Defiance, OH High School, served honorably in the U. S. Air Force from 1957-65, was a Graduate of Defiance College and worked for General Motors in Defiance from 1963-1974. He moved to Albion, MI in 1974 where he worked for Hayes-Albion as Quality Supervisor, Superintendent until 1979 then from 1981-1995 worked for Borden, Inc. as Senior Tech Service Chemical Engineer. For health reasons, he retired and bought his farm which he enjoyed. He studied for the Ministry and in 2002 became Deacon under the special supervising pastor, Tim Olson of First Lutheran Church of Charlotte, MI. His great love of teaching the many Bible Studies and Love of History made it so interesting. He became a Commission Servant of the Word for Open Arms Lutheran Church, Eaton Rapids in 2007. Surviving are: his wife of 30 years, Betty (Bunn) Phillips; 2 sons, Todd (Diane) Phillips of Jackson, WI and Kent (Kim) Phillips of Albion; daughter, Wendy (Ronald) Boersma of Battle Creek; 4 step sons, James (Sandi) Morris of Defiance, OH, Steven (Kim) Morris of Holland, Michael Morris of Defiance, OH and Donald (Carrie) Morris of Bellevue; 2 step daughters, Debra (Kevin) Bertram of Defiance and Kathleen (Collin) Walter of Battle Creek; 28 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren and sisters, Carole Ann (Victor) Dumas and Julia (Jonas) Halonen both of St. Ignace, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Charles Phillips. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A. M. Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at the First Lutheran Church, 550 E. Shepherd St., Charlotte with Pastor Timothy Olson officiating. Interment will be in the Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids, MI. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte, MI. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Deacon Scholarship Program.
