James Elzie Taylor, age 69, of Charlotte, formerly of Matador, Texas, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by those he loved most. He was born July 24, 1954, in Matador, Texas, the son of James and Elsie (Stone) Taylor. James graduated from Motley County High School and soon after graduating enlisted in the United States Navy. He proudly served his country from 1973 to 1977. James spent the majority of his career in public service. He was a Deputy Sheriff for San Patricio County, Texas for 30 years. He loved his work and considered himself to be a true servant of his community. James wanted to make a difference in the lives of people he had the privilege of encountering along life’s road. He had a heart of gold and a personality that you were attracted to. James had a calming effect on others but at 6’4” and with a commanding voice he could get your attention if necessary. He was president of the Sinton, Texas, Lion’s Club for many years and was proud to be a Lion. In his spare-time, James enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting and fishing. James’s greatest joys in life were his God, family, country, and friends. He cherished each and every one and always wanted the very best for them. James was a friend to everyone.
James is survived by his wife, Lisa LaFay; daughter, Laura Taylor formerly of Texas; grandson, Caleb Taylor-Rogers; grandson-in-law, David Carr; great-grandchildren, Layla Pace, Joy Taylor, Benjamin Carr, Dallas Carr; siblings, Troy (Sheryll) Taylor of Burr Oak, Jane (Rick) Smith of Hastings, Nancy (Michael) Ferguson of Rockdale, Texas; and brother-in-law, Pat Fore.
He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughters, Bridget Taylor-Carr, Pierce Tricarico; wives, Gilda Taylor, Sue Taylor; and sister, Helen Fore.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at 7 P.M. at the Burkhead-Green-Kilgo Funeral Home. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 4 P.M. to 7 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will take place Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at 2 P.M. at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
