James William Gomoll, age 77, of Charlotte, MI, passed away unexpectedly on November 8, 2021, in Ann Arbor. Jim was affectionately known as “Jungle Jim” to his hunting and fishing friends. He was born in Detroit, MI to James and Ruth (Thornberry) Gomoll on November 12, 1943. Jim graduated from Cass Tech High School in Detroit and then joined the United States Army. Jim was very proud of his service to his county and the time he spent being stationed in Korea. In fact, he celebrated Veteran’s Day more than his own birthday! Jim retired from work life in his early 30s and went to work for himself. He was a tool and chemical salesman selling numerous products to auto parts stores throughout Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio. Jim did not consider this as “working”. Instead, as he put it, he spent the last 40 years “kibitzing” with his multitude of friends over many parts counters. Jim also enjoyed his yearly trips to Frankfort, MI, to “the shack” where he spent time squirrel and deer hunting as well as fishing on Lake Michigan with his buddies. Every month of May you would find Jim soaking up the sun in the Bahamas. He liked to joke that he spent his time there sitting on the beach getting his hair braided! Jim’s life legacy was that he loved his family and was 100% devoted to them. Building and keeping relationships were of utmost importance to him- especially his life-long friendship with two of his closest buddies, Derrel Dunfort and Larry Ashley. Jim will always be remembered for his loving and caring heart and for the nicknames by which he called many of his family. Jim will be missed by his “#1 Daughter” Loriann; grandchildren, Karry and her husband Willie, Adam and his wife Makayla, Chelsea and her husband David, “Spot” (Danyell) and her husband JR, “Tree” (Holly), Mindy; great-grandchildren, “Samson” (Malaki), “Bob” (Breann), Kaiden, Leoni, “Hotshot” (Henry), David JR, “Firefly” (Vayda), Jannah, and “Baby Suntken 2022”, whom he was looking forward to meeting soon. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Tanya, and his son “Smiley” (Larry). In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Jim’s family. A graveside service will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery in Mason on Saturday, November 13, 2021, at 12 PM with Pastor Darrell Clements officiating.
