John E. Nelson

John E. Nelson of Charlotte, MI, age 68, died Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at the Sparrow Hospital in Lansing after an extended illness. John was born October 9, 1946 in Charlotte, the son of Joseph and Barbara (Grier) Nelson. He was a Charlotte High School Graduate and had served in the U. S. Navy from 1964-67. He was a retired Eaton County Animal Control Officer, had previously served as an Eaton County Sheriff’s Deputy and prior to that was a small business owner in the Ellsworth, MI area for 20 years. He was an avid Deer hunter and fisherman, enjoyed spending time at their cottage on Lake Thirteen, and enjoyed traveling, especially their numerous trips to Jamaica. He is survived by: his wife, Cheryl Laverty; Daughter, Carrie Crain of Atlanta, GA; 3 step children, Erica (Troy) Terwilliger of Charlotte, Aaron (April) Laverty of Charlotte and Dustin Laverty of Lansing; 4 grandchildren, Isabella, Hannah, Aiden and Asher; his mother, Barbara Nelson of Charlotte; brother, William (Sue) Nelson of Plainwell; nephew, Jeremy (Shay); niece, Tonia (Jon); Aunt, Julia Weaver of Charlotte and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Nelson. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A Memorial Service and Luncheon will be held on Sunday, August 2, 2015 from 12-4 PM at the American Legion Post #42, 1000 W. Lawrence Ave. in Charlotte with Military Rites provided by the U. S.
