John Henry Lewis, age 75 of Charlotte died Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at home after a short battle with cancer. Mr. Lewis was born September 30, 1937 in Charlotte the son of Raymond and Ethel (Wright) Lewis. He lived in Charlotte, Bellevue and Portland. His winters were spent in Winter Haven, Florida. He attended Charlotte High School until 1955. He was employed at Oldsmobile, John Bean and Franchino Mold and Engineering from where he retired in 2002. He enjoyed golfing, tennis, walking and bicycling. He was a member of the Charlotte Seventh Day Adventist Church. John served in the Army in 1956-1957 and was stationed in Germany. While serving, his platoon won the 57th Tank Battalion Draper Trophy, winning the title for the best platoon in the U. S. Army. He won best on all weapons for marksmanship. He was high scorer, the Army’s best in the All Weapons category for 1957. He is survived by his wife of five years, Janette (Bruce) Lewis; one son, Michael (Mia) Lewis of Jenison; one daughter, Victoria (Jeffrey) Rick of Jackson; 5 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, brothers & sisters-in-law. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Gwenith (Goodenough) Lewis and brothers, Tom, Richard and Robert Lewis and sister, Patsy Johnson, half brothers, Clarence and Paul Lewis and half sisters, Dorthea Haskitt and Alberta Kenny. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A. M. Monday, April 1, 2013 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, 206 W. Lawrence Ave. in Charlotte with Pastor Jeff Dowell officiating. Interment will be in the West Carmel Cemetery, Charlotte. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at the Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Charlotte Seventh Day Adventist School.
