John L. Whiting

John L. Whiting of Charlotte, Michigan, age 84, died Tuesday, August 04, 2015 at home following a short illness. John was born March 25, 1931 in Addison, MI the son of John C. and Ruth M. (Wheaton) Whiting. He grew up in Grass Lake Michigan and had been a resident of Charlotte since 1966. He graduated from Grass Lake High School, served in the U. S. Army in Korea during the Korean War and had studied Landscaping & Nursery Management at Michigan State University. He operated the Mapleview Nursery in Charlotte from 1966-1996 and prior to that had co-owned Mount Pleasant Nursery in Mt. Pleasant, MI. He was currently a member of the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church of Charlotte having been a member from 1966 to the present time. Surviving are: his wife of 53 years. Elna (John) Whiting (They were married Aug. 4, 1962); daughter, Nancy Whiting of Charlotte; sons, Steven (Sue) Whiting of Conifer, CO and Jeffrey Whiting of Auburn Hills, MI; two grandchildren, Jeanette Head of Ann Arbor and John Head of Grand Rapids; brother, George (Jan) Whiting of Jackson; sisters, Mary Ellen Saylor of Jackson and Esther (Jerry) Shafer of Springport and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Russell Saylor. Visitation will be held from 2-5 PM on Sunday, Aug. 9, 2015 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, Aug. 10, 2015 at the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church in Charlotte with Pastor Gary Wales officiating. Memorial contributions may go to the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church or to the Eaton Community Palliative Care.
