Mary M. Nordenbrock, of Charlotte, passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2019. She was born November 14, 1932, in Harrison, Mich. to Asa and Mildred Carey. She started her formal education in a one room schoolhouse and graduated from Beaverton High School in 1950. She then moved to Flint, Mich. where she met a friend named Ida Williams and soon became like a third daughter to Idas parents. In 1951 during the Korean conflict, Mary joined the U.S. Air Force and served honorably for three years. During that time, she was stationed at Selfridge Air Force base near Mount Clemens, Mich. There she met and fell in love with Daniel J. Nordenbrock. They were married in 1956, and had six children. In the 1970s, Mary joined with others to promote social and economic justice. She also taught many children how to read, tutoring them individually (one-on-one) in home settings. In 1979, Mary became a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Charlotte. She enjoyed the exposure to nature, and the variety of people she met in her nearly 20 years of service. Mary was a member of Peace Lutheran Church. After retirement, she and her husband Dan spent much time volunteering in the community. She enjoyed reading, cooking, picnics, and live theater. She loved her country and the woods and waters of Michigan. Mary is survived by her children, David Nordenbrock of Grand Rapids, Martha Cooper of Grand Rapids, Ruth (Bob) Blameuser of Antioch, Ill., Joseph Nordenbrock of Grand Rapids, Sara (Ralph) Rounds of Hart, Danny Nordenbrock of Alpena; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and brother, James L. Carey of Big Rapids. She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Daniel J. Nordenbrock in 2018, and by her siblings, Robert G. Carey, Martha Horton, and Mildred Bright. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 22, 2019, at 11 A.M. at Peace Lutheran Church, in Charlotte. The family will receive friends on Monday, October 21, 2019, from 4 P.M. to 6 P.M. at Burkhead-Green-Kilgo Funeral Home.
