Maxon Paul Wehr, age 92, of Charlotte, died peacefully at home, surrounded by family, Monday, July 29, 2019. Max was born March 21, 1927, in Charlotte the youngest child of Philip and Lula (Shumaker) Wehr. He grew up on the family farm and while in high school was selected drum major for the Charlotte High School Marching Band. He graduated from Charlotte High School in 1943 at the age of 16. Max also enjoyed flying and made his first solo flight as a teenager. On August 15, 1947, he married Dorothy Wildeman at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Lansing. He was a faithful and active member of First Lutheran Church of Charlotte for 69 years, serving as head usher and in many other capacities. Max was the only child in his family who did not want to carry on the family tradition to farm. So, he started working in the retail shoe business in downtown Charlotte at the age of 13. At the age of 32 he established, owned and operated Wehr Better Shoes on Main Street in Charlotte. He was in business for 45 years. During this time, he also opened a second store in Grand Ledge. In 1981, he earned his license as a certified pedorthist and was a known expert throughout the state in fitting shoes to those with medical foot issues. Max loved the shoe business and raised his five children with this sole occupation. Max was also an active member of the Rotary for many years. Max and his wife, Dot, as he called her, loved to travel. They visited, along with their children, nearly all of the 50 states and Canada in their motor home and traveled to Germany with a church group in 1996. Max enjoyed downhill skiing, golfing, playing Polish Poker, gardening and spending time with his family and friends. Max is survived by his wife of nearly 72 years, Dorothy; of Charlotte; four daughters: Judith (Phil) Hooper of Big Rapids and Grand Haven, Kay (Darwin) Mahar of Reed City, Mary Jo (Brian) Huver of Charlotte, Polly Burns of Reed City; six grandchildren: Erin Mahar, Matthew (Kim) Mahar, Dr. Gretchen (Dr. Jonathan) Winters, Ryan Converse, Elliana Burns, Mason Huver; and six great grandchildren: Taylor, Emily, Julian, Tristan, Drew, and Max (his namesake); as well as several nieces and nephews. Max was preceded in death by his parents; son, Mark and son-in-law Paul Burns in 2018; sisters: Elizabeth, Naomi and Doris; and brothers: Roland and Rex. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 2, 2019, at 11 A.M. at the First Lutheran Church of Charlotte. The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 1, 2019, from 5 P.M. to 8 P.M. at the Burkhead-Green-Kilgo Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church.
