Philip Francis Rooney

Philip “Phil” Francis Rooney, age 87 of Charlotte, passed away at his home on May 5, 2021. He was born in Hudson, Michigan on March 13, 1934 to Francis and Clara (Kellogg) Rooney. Phil’s childhood years were spent growing up and attending St Mary School in Jackson, Michigan where he graduated with the Class of ’52. He was married to Laura Wing in 1954 in Jackson. Phil worked for many years for the State of Michigan as Deputy Commissioner of Commerce. He loved woodworking in his spare time. He also enjoyed the great Michigan outdoors and was a successful hunter and fisherman. Another one of Phil’s hobbies was reupholstering furniture. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. Phil is survived by his wife, Laura; his sons, Philip Rooney and David Rooney; grandsons, Mike and Jason Rooney, all of Charlotte; sister, Margaret Rooney of Jackson. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Mike Rooney; sister, Eileen Salyer, and his brother, Larry Rooney. Private funeral services will be held at the Burkhead-Green-Kilgo Funeral Home. Interment will take place at Maple Hill Cemetery. Those desiring may make contributions in Phil’s honor to the Special Olympics.
