Raymond Howard Wardwell, age 93, of Portland, MI, passed away on Sunday, December 22, 2024, at Eaton Community Palliative Care in Charlotte. Raymond was born on October 5, 1931, in Lansing, MI, to Cedric and Arlene (Swift) Wardwell. He graduated from Potterville High School with the class of ’50. After graduation, Raymond joined the United States Army where he faithfully served his country during the Korean War. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, Raymond attended Western Michigan College, graduating with his B.A. in 1958. He met the love of his life and was married to Mary Hatfield on November 12, 1960, in Potterville.
Raymond worked for the State of Michigan for 30 years as an employee of MDOT. He was a lifetime member of the Free Masons as well as the VFW. One of Raymond’s hobbies was operating his shortwave radio. He was an amateur ham radio operator as well. Raymond lived on the banks of the Grand River where he loved spending time outdoors listening to the ceaseless flow of the water and fishing. He was always busy with fixing and building things. He will be missed by his friends and family.
Raymond is survived by his brother, Lynn Wardwell, of Potterville; 13 nieces and nephews; 21 grand nieces and nephews; 23 great grand nieces and nephews; and 16 great-great grand nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Mary, in 2010.
Following Raymond’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no services held.
