Rodney R. Whitaker, 60, of Charlotte, passed away peacefully on the farm surrounded by his loving family on May 2, 2017. He was born on October 24, 1956 in Charlotte to Harold and Irene (Tyler) Whitaker. He was a longtime farmer and truck driver. He enjoyed being outside to work on his tractors, to plow the field, to plant beans and wheat, and to sit under the shade tree as he overlooked the crops growing on the Old Clay Hill. He always looked forward to people stopping by to visit and listen to his funny life stories. Spending time on the farm with his grandson, Hunter and granddaughter, Alexys were some of his happiest moments in recent years. Rod is survived by his wife of 39 years, Vicki (Redfield) Whitaker; daughters Sylvia (Larry) and Savanah (Kyle); grandchildren Hunter, Alexys, and EmRee; brothers Steve and Dan (Michelle) Whitaker; sisters Jackie (David) Ames and Connie (Herb) Ames; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Harold Whitaker; mother Irene (Tyler) Whitaker; brothers Jerry and Virgil Carter; sister Jean (Carter) Fuller; and sister-in-law Diane (Bishop) Whitaker. A celebration of Rod’s life will be held on May 6, 2017 at 2 p.m. with Michael Fuller officiating at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home and a visitation from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to Great Lakes Caring Hospice. Online condolences may be shared at burkhead-greenfuneralhome.com
