Wilbur Lee Thompson, age 73, of Charlotte, formerly of Winter Haven, Florida, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, April 30, 2023. He was born April 29, 1950, in Joplin, Missouri, the son of Donald and Mary (Sanders) Thompson. Wilbur faithfully served his country as a Sargent in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. During the war Wilbur worked as a helicopter repairman and as a door gunner on a UH-1 Huey. Wilbur loved his country and was proud to fight for the freedoms we all are able to enjoy today. On June 3, 1991, he married Rosalie Jane Black in Lakeland, Florida. He cherished his wife and family and would do absolutely anything for them. Wilbur worked for over 35 years for Sea World in Florida where he served in many different capacities. Wilbur and Rosalie moved to Michigan three years ago to be close to their family. He loved Michigan and it’s four magnificent seasons.
Wilbur is survived by his wife of nearly 32 years, Rosalie; children: James (Carla) McMillan of Lakeland, FL, James (Sherry) Black of Charlotte, Tricia Putman of Winter Haven, FL, Gabrielle Putman of Winter Haven, FL, Amelia (Jay) Oliver of Winter Haven, FL; 12 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and siblings: Mary and Jim.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
In keeping with Wilbur’s wishes, cremation has taken place and burial with military honors will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
